How to run a narrative gap analysis for your brand

By Captoo Team

You spend millions crafting your brand narrative. "We are the most user-friendly platform for creatives." But if a user asks an AI, "What is the best platform for creatives?", and the AI says your competitor, your narrative has failed at the 'last mile'.

This is where a Narrative Gap Analysis comes in. It helps you measure the distance between your marketing goals and AI reality.

Step 1: Define Your Pillars

Identify the 3-5 core attributes you want to own. Examples: "Fastest," "Secure," "Enterprise-Ready," "Best Support."

Step 2: Construct the Prompt Matrix

Don't just ask "What is Brand X?" You need to probe the AI with specific, high-intent queries.

  • Direct: "What are the pros and cons of [Brand X]?"
  • Comparative: "Compare [Brand X] vs [Competitor Y] for security."
  • Superlative: "What is the most secure platform in [Category]?"

Step 3: Score the Output

Analyze the AI's responses for each pillar. We recommend a simple scoring system:

  • +1 (Aligned): AI explicitly reinforces your narrative.
  • 0 (Neutral/Absent): AI doesn't mention the attribute.
  • -1 (Conflict): AI contradicts your narrative (e.g., calls you "expensive" when you aim for "affordable").

Step 4: Identify and Close the Gaps

If you score a -1 on "Security," look at why. Is the AI citing an old breach? Is there a lack of recent positive coverage? Your action plan should focus on creating signal-rich content that specifically addresses these missing or negative links.
